The Future Focus Early Learning Centre project came to fruition in response to the intensive subdivision development of Papamoa and surrounding areas and the demand for high quality early childhood facilities to cater for that growth. The project team expressed a desire for a centre that would provide a nurturing and inspiring environment where the child’s learning, growth and care was supported and also enriched by the design.

The architecture’s form and scale was considered to reflect a more domesticated aesthetic, which is sympathetic to a child’s view of the world, reflect the surrounding residential area but still accommodate the overall number of children the centre was to cater for in order to satisfy the financial constraints of the business. 

Formally the building was conceived around a double height gable central circulation spine with simple rectilinear box forms flanking either side which accommodate the learning and amenity spaces. This central circulation spine becomes the bustling conduit where all entry and exit points to all learning and amenity spaces connect to/from, and provides the all important secure entry and exit point for the children and adults who frequent the centre.

The project by its very nature is considered to be a key contributor to the community in which it inhabits and acts as a hub where whanau, via the formal qualities of the central circulation spine, are channelled to pause and converse with friends, informally connect with people across the community and be a space where critical community focussed information is displayed and communicated. It was critical this space was voluminous, light filled, inspiring, connected to nature and does its best to enrich the wellbeing of all those who frequent the centre.
