Peter Smith

Senior Registered Architect

Qualification: BArch, ANZIA

Peter started his architecture career with the then Ministry of Works. In 1985 he was contacted by Barry Lonergan and joined DLA in the Whanganui office and began a long and illustrious relationship with the dairy industry.

He moved to London in 1990 with his wife and gained experience in other facets of architecture,  working on large hotel projects before returning to New Zealand with his young family in 1991.

He settled in Tauranga which was reminiscent of his childhood growing up in Akaroa, close to the sea and with the lifestyle that suited the family. He worked as a freelance contractor for Fonterra, Babbage, as well as DLA. Here he developed and furthered his design skills and his expertise in the dairy industry.

Ultimately choosing to contract only for DLA, he is one of the most experienced consultants working in the dairy industry today. He is at the forefront of process building design, material selection, innovation, and is well known and respected.

Now semi-retired Peter continues to strive to be innovative, and to provide quality building packages, both functionally and aesthetically to meet client’s requirements and expectations, and he continues to maintain his knowledge of evolving materials and building techniques.

Peter loves life in Tauranga, living close to the sea he makes the most of any opportunity to be out fishing in his small dingy and bringing home some kahawai or snapper. He enjoys time with his son’s family and international travel is now more often on the agenda.
