This beach house was the last project designed by the late Barry Lonergan, founding partner of DLA Architects. The client and Barry shared a special relationship over the decades which saw Barry design numerous buildings for both business and pleasure. The particular double-level beach house was designed to capture maximum ocean views on the dominant beach side section on the corner of Grant Place and Papamoa Beach Road. Living areas for the semi-retired occupants were positioned on the upper level with additional space for visiting family and friends on the lower level. Privacy from the road was achieved through a series of cedar clad decks flanking the main living zones. A relaxed material palette of dark stained cedar and smaller scale, warm clear sealed cedar screening is enlivened by a pop of fire engine red steel support posts and front door.
